Two slideshows are included here to inspire kids to research time and place before writing. The “Setting: Researching Time and Place” slideshow demonstrates the need for library research when writing fiction and nonfiction, especially when writing about characters, subjects, and settings outside of students’ experience and knowledge.

The “Let’s Write! Researching Time and Place” slideshow shares two different writing exercises. The first, for younger students, introduces students to library research. The second, for older students and experienced writers, serves as a culminating writing project that challenges students to use their imaginations, writing knowledge, and research skills to create a historical fiction short story.

Teacher Tip! Please preview the slideshows and educator guides before sharing with your students so you can determine which activities and exercises will best meet the needs of your class.
