Buildings are constructed brick by brick. Stories are built word by word. Below are two slideshows (“Power Words” and “Let’s Write! Power Words“) that explain the benefits of using strong nouns and verbs. The first slideshow introduces the parts of speech and demonstrates how writers write with nouns and verbs, showing students why nouns and verbs are so powerful. Two classroom writing experiments that demonstrate the importance of word specificity in writing are also included. The “Let’s Write!” slideshow features two activities for using power words to write both a poem and a scene. The scene writing exercise expands students’ building blocks incrementally from words to strong sentences and paragraphs.

Teacher Tips! Please preview the slideshows and educator guides before sharing with your students so you can determine which activities and exercises will best meet the needs of your class. We also recommend that you first show the “Your Five Senses” slideshow to your students before the “Power Words” slideshow.
