The “Setting: Comparing and Contrasting” slideshow demonstrates that comparing and contrasting time periods, weather, geographic locations like city and rural country—anything related to time and place—can enhance students’ abilities to write about story settings, broadening their descriptive language skills. It introduces the use of similes and metaphors and encourages students to use sensory language. Three Let’s Write! exercises are included to direct students in how to compare and contrast so they can use that skill in their writing.

Teacher Tip! Please preview the slideshow and educator guide before sharing with your students so you can determine which activities and exercises will best meet the needs of your class.
